Is there a link that could show me which CDR's are/are not
compatible with XP. I really have tried a pretty in depth
search and cannot find...any help would be appreciated

Actually, the easiest (and the surest) way to find out is to ask the
manufacturer of the CD burner. The information is likely on their web site.

Yes I understand this, I did however find a list in the
past, I assume that the problem may be that the burner
needs a firware update of some type, but HP charges for
this, so I wanted to make sure that it would work prior to
me telling this person to update...(I work in tech support)
I will search the HP site and see what they have

If you are planning on buying a new drive then all should be compatible with
xp. Besides most cdroms drives sold rewritable drives also. Get one on
sale and read the box completly. If you buy from a local computer store
such as Best Buy they will sometimes install it free.

For HP drives there is quite good software available for free from their
site. By Veritas - RecordNow (a Lite but competent 'mastering' one for
CD-R) at
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40380.html
and DLA - a very good packet writing one for CD-RW
