CD to CD copy - is it this difficult?

I put an audio CD into my computer today and expected there to be a really
easy right click on either the source CD or the target CD-R to create a
clone copy/backup of this CD. I started up WMP expecting to find the answer
there but I appear to be out of luck there also.

Am I missing something? ... can one not make a hardware to hardware clone
copy of a CD or must I burn it to MP3's and then back to CD-R within WMP.

If I can't do this with XP Home edition with no additional CD ripper/burning
software then can anyone recommend a good freebie if it exists?

Help appreciated.

Most, if not all, CD-RW drives come with burn software - some good and some
not so good. Mine came with Ahead Nero version 5.4, which works just as
simply and easily as you had hoped. I've never tried using WMP for the task.

Hi, PK.

I'm kinda new at this CD burning stuff, but I think it depends on both your
hardware and your software. CD-R depends on having a steady stream of data
available for burning. That's why many software packages insist on creating
a copy on the (much faster) hard drive first, before starting the burn, so
that there's no danger of "buffer underrun". Also, of course, your reading
drive must be fast enough to stay up with the writing drive or your burner
software must have "underrun protection".

At least once I did successfully do a CD-to-CD-R copy; it was from a slow
DVD-ROM drive to a fast CD-RW drive, using Nero Burning Rom 5x and software
that came bundled with my TDK VeloCD 40x12x48x burner.

Like I said, I'm new to this subject - far from expert - so others can
probably tell you a lot more about it than I can. All I know is that it
is - sometimes - possible.

Maybe the source is copy protected. Is that an audio cd
you bought from the store or your own burnt music.

I should add that a slow burn rate, 4X, for example - will result in a
higher percentage of successful burns. I already have enough coasters!

Papa, RC, Wesley,

thanks for the quick replies.

I bought this CD-W/R several months ago and since then I've been playing
games, music CDs and ripping some MP3's and burning back with WMP. This task
and Papa's generous reminder helped me dig out a dusty copy of Ahead Nero
that did indeed come with this very CD drive - excellent, another piece of
software to play with.

Thanks again, burning in progress.

The inbuilt burning does not support copying CDs. You might copy the
files down to disk and make a new CD from them, but with audio tracks
there is a danger that they will get converted to compressed wma ones;
not a good idea

To do a true copy you need third party software - either one of the
complete suites, or, for just copying, CloneCD
