The drive will not read blank cd-rw's. The option to
send files to cd-rw for burning is missing along with
the "recording" tab under its properties. Otherwise the
drive works find, can read other cd's and burn through my
HP record now software. Windows however does not
recognize it. I tried the below link...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;316529%22

but everything was set up alright and i have not
installed any new software besides windows updates, which
i rolled back with restore and they are not the problem.
Any idea cause this is driving me nuts?!?

Have you installed the UDF reader that came with the drive? If you use the
CD-Rw as a RW and do not finalize it, then the UDF reader must be installed
in order to read the disk. I would suggest that you read the Help files or
the manual that came with the burner. You could have solved this problem in
much less time than it took to post your question had you read the manual.

Bobby,

Thanks for the reply. I do not have an documentation for
the drive as it came preinstalled on my HP computer. All
i know is its make and model number (mitsumi cr-48x9te).
As far as a UDF reader goes I'm not quite sure what that
is. Thanks for any help again.

I'm not sure how your response might help. "If you use the
CD-Rw as a RW and do not finalize it, then the UDF reader
must be installed to read the disk." This makes no sense
whatsoever. How else can anyone use a CD-RW except as a
CD-RW? If files are burned to the disk and the disk is not
finalized (i.e., the disk is burned in multi-session
format) the same software used to burn the disk can read
it (and append additional sessions)and it doesn't have to
be in UDF format. Why not take a little time to read the
manual yourownself before posting nonsense?

Also, make sure that your drive has the most recent firmware for best
compatibility. There are many reasons Windows may not detect it as a
burner. Have you installed th HiMAT update from Windows Update? Also,
you can try uninstalling the drive from Hardware Manager, then reboot
and let it reinstall the drive. It may have just grabbed the wrong
driver or not fully loaded the driver. Check out this link for the
latest firmware:

If the software package that was installed does not include a UDF reader,
then the disk can only be read from within the software package itself. The
OP states that other disks are recognized, but not CD-RW disks. that
indicates that his system does not natively recognize UDF formatted disks,
therefore it is safe to assume that the UDF reader is not installed. If the
OP wants to view RW disks without opening the authoring software, then the
only solution to allow this to occur is to install the UDF reader so that
windows can recognize the data on the disk. This scenario varies by OS,
brand of the hardware, and what authoring software is installed. The answer
that I provided still stands. CD-Rw do not use multi-session; they are
treated as another HDD with packet writing software. If the OP put files on
the CD-RW, not using packet writing software, and then did not finalize the
disk, then windows would not recognize the data on the disk.

Perhaps you are the one who is posting nonsense.

You're a bloody idiot. The OP said that his drive will not
read (see) BLANK CD-RWs. If you think that this might be
because the disks were UDF-formatted, and he doesn't have
packet-writing software, then htf did the disks get
formatted???? "CD-Rw do not use multi-session..." What???
You can use a CD-RW the same way a CD-R is used, which is
to say that one CAN do multi-session burning. You have no
idea wtf you're talking about, so why not just leave it
alone.

LOL, that was great, but remember... be nice :)

Try these links: (and yes I know one is for DVD-RW instead of CD-RW)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818733

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321641

Also, you will need an application to format the CD-RW. Windows will not
do this. If the disc is already formatted, it should show up as blank,
but be able to be written to. If UDF were to have been used, it would
prompt you because Windows will tell you it cannot read it and the
beggining of UDF formatted CD-RW's contain the UDF Reader which prompts
to install.

Personal note to you...do me a favor...reach up and grab your left ear with
your right hand. Now, reach up and grab your right ear with your left hand.
Good. Now pull on both ears. Did you hear that popping sound? That sound
was your head being pulled out of your ass. Now STFU.

While the criticism may have been harsh, the person you are telling to
perform a anal head removal to is correct - you advice is misleading
and almost completely incorrect (although you did have some
glimmerings of correct info here and there).

Um okay so what am i supposed to do to fix the problem.
All third party software can read and burn dics no
problem. Windows can not read cd-r or cd-rw. Tried
correcting it but there is no "recording tab" under the
drives properties?????

LOL, good question. Everything is so messed up through this thread that
I can't figure out what is going on. What is the drive make and model?
There may be an available firmware update. Also, try removing the
drive from Hardware Manager and reboot. See if Windows properly installs
it after that. It sounds like a fudged driver to me.

Nathan,
Thanks I appreciate the reply. The drive is a mitsumi cr-
48x9te that came preinstalled on my HP 751n. I checked
there site and did not see any firmware updates for the
drive. I am going to try giving them a call tomrrow and
see if they can offer any help to me. I did remove the
drive from device manager and let windows reinstall it on
boot up, but the problem did not correct itself. Maybe
if I do it manually? I can usually fix most problems,
this one just has me pulling my hair...lol. Thanks again.

Gee, if my head was indeed up my butt, that must have
been where I saw your post.
