I'm running XP Pro with SP1, I get "invalid function" error message when trying to read CD in either CD-RW or DVD drive. Disks are recognized only if the system boots with a disk in the drive
I have tried different cables, different settings in Bios etc.. MS knowledge base reports Roxio is the culprit, however I have never had Roxio installed
Any suggestions before I use the Format Hammer?

1) Sounds like a driver problem. Check the drives in Device Manager. On the drive's Properties page, selct the Driver tab, then Driver Details..
The following entries should be listed
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sy
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\imapi.sy
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\redbook.sy
C:\WINDOWS\System32\storprop.dl

If they are not listed, check they are present in the relevant directories (folders) on your system

2) Try using the drives in a different computer

3) What does MS knowledge base say about Roxio? The devil is in the detail. If it says that the Roxio ASPI driver is the culprit, it is possible that another program has installed this onto your system, or even that the ASPI driver from another program is causing the problem (less likely). I have no problems with the Nero ASPI driver and my MSI 52x24x52x burner and LG DVD-ROM drives. The Nero InfoTool will tell you about the ASPI drivers on your system. If you suspect this is the problem, either backup and delete the ASPI driver file/s or try 2) above.
