My Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop has stopped recognizing CD-RW disks. The CD-RW disks are perfectly good and they work on my Compaq desktop computer. I spent one hour on the phone with Dell tech support, and the last thing he said was that I can try reinstalling Windows XP. This was after he made me remove the CDRW drive to look for physical damage, and reinstall Roxio software that came with the Dell utilities CD. I thought I shall ask the user group if anyone faced such a problem and how they fixed it

Check the properties of the CD Burner drive and click on the recording tab. If
the check mark to enable recording is checked, uncheck it and hit apply and then
recheck it and hit apply.

If not check this site out:

this might be bit far fetched idea, but... have those exactly SAME cd-rw
disks worked before? I just wonder if you have bought new, bigger capacity,
disks and problem occurs in them? I had some 80 min cd-rw disks and 90min
cd-r disks my laptop drive could not recognize even if desktop drive did....

from my previous post on the subject:

Download (and install) tweakui from the microsoft website. Under the my
computer - drive selection, make sure that all of the drive letters are
checked. (I'm sure there is a way to do this directly without tweakui, but I
don't know how).

I found that, for whatever reason, my CD-ROM drive letter was not checked
which is why the hardware wasn't recognized in Windows Explorer or My
Computer on my machine.
