CD-ROM Problem

My apologies if this issue has come up before.

I tried to install an old (1995) Oxford dictionary on my hard disk in order
not to run from CD-ROM. After installation, I started the dictionary, and
it
didn't work properly. It asked me to insert the CD for starting the
dictionary.

How do I make it run on the hard-disk drive without using the CD?

Thanks.

Two issues..

#1.. XP may not like the program particularly..
#2.. isn't the dictionary just a little old?

Thanks for your comments.

Re #2: Yes, it is a little old. However, it came with Chinese characters
useful to my kids, and I don't think there is a new edition, so I'm stuck
with it. Back in 1995 I only had a < 1.0 GB hard drive, so it was nice to
have a dictionary on CD-ROM.

Re #1: The problem is that the installation software that came with the CD
only allows one to access the dictionary from CD. I have a new Oxford
dictionary on CD (but without Chinese characters) which no longer has this
problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

I am not familiar with that 1995 Oxford dictionary program but I suspect
that perhaps there might be some hidden files on its cdrom that you did
not get copied to the hard drive. In Windows Explorer, go to
Tools > Folder Options... > View tab
Under "Hidden files and folders" make sure it is set to
"Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"
- Verify that you really do want to do that -
Then click Apply and OK
Then copy the entire contents of the 1995 Oxford dictionary cdrom
to an appropriate folder (you may need to create one) on the C:\
(something like C:\Oxford Dictionary or whatever)
Then try installing from that folder and see if it will work then.
If it still prompts to insert the cdrom when you try to run the program,
see if it will let you point to C:\Oxford Dictionary instead and see if that
is accepted. You may have to point to some subfolder and or file.
If that sorts it out, then you will probably want to go back to
Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options... > View tab
and Restore Defaults or recheck individual settings that were changed
previously. HTH
