My CD and DVD both quit working at the same time. I have tried to uninstall
them and re-install them several times. I have also powered down and checked
all the internal cables for the drives. They both are getting power, but XP
isn't recognizing them. The error listed in the Device Properties for Sounds
and Audio Devices is: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its
configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code
19)

I get this for both drives when I uninstall and re-install them.

A Driver-type file, probably from a CD burning package, has gone AWOL,
leaving a hanging reference in the registry. To tidy up, get a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you use.

Thanks to all who responded. I downloaded the cdgone and merged it into my
registry, and now it works fine.

After upgrading from 98 to XP, and trying to use my cd-burning sotware for
the first time since upgrading, I now appear to have the same problem as Jim
Syndi.

I have tried to follow the steps you prescribe, and which seemed to work for
Jim Syndi, but I am getting the message cdgone.zip is not a valid Win32
application.

I'm also not quite sure what you mean by 'extract it' - is this just
extracting it from the zip file? - and merge it into the registry - is this
just a copy and paste?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Go back to Doug Knox's site here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

and get the Zip folder fix. Then you should be able to just double-click
the cd-rom fix zip file and it will act like a folder. Inside will be
the registry patch. Either double-click it to run from within the zip
folder or drag it out to My Documents or where ever you want.
Double-clicking the registry patch will produce a dialog box asking you
if you want to merge the patch. You answer "yes".
