CD ROM drivers

A week ago I did a clean install of Windows XP Home, and
both my Acer CDRW drive and Pioneer DVD-ROM continued
working fine. I then installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4,
which naturally turned out to be incompatible with Windows
XP. Windows complained of incompatible drivers and disabled
them, but the ROM drives continued to work for the time
being. To stop Windows from warning me upon startup I just
removed the two offending files ('cdr4_2k.sys' and
'cdralw2k.sys') from the windows/system32 folder (bad idea,
I guess). After next startup, neither of the ROM drives are
appearing under 'My Computer'. I put the files back where I
found them - the drives still don't work, so I tried
uninstalling and re-adding the hardware, to no avail - it
just ends up how it was, and the driver properties says
Windows is still disabling those drivers.

I can't get support from Microsoft because this is an OEM
copy of Windows XP. I'm not sure exactly what to look for
but there appear to be no drivers for Acer drives on their
website, and the Pioneer site isn't too helpful either. I
guess the Easy CD Creator installer messed with something
fundamental.. is there some way I can restore things to how
they were without reinstalling Windows XP? Doing so would
be a major pain :(

Thanks in advance. Please email me if you have a solution.

Thanks, DMG. I actually stumbled on an obscure solution
shortly after I posted the message, so it's all good now.
I'll be more careful about installing old software in
future :)
