CD-R Troubles

When I want to read a CD-R that I wrote files on nothing happens and when I
click the CD drive it stops responding until I manualy eject the CD. I wrote
my files using the normal recorder at 4X speed. Is there anything that will
help me write more efficiently? I ruined 3 CD-R's attempting to wite on them.
When I used higher speed the CD just got buffered, but I can see the files.
When I used 4X I can't read it at all, I can't even see its properties. I
have plenty of free space and I did all the requirements when I'm about to
write. Here are some things in the error log for the day if it helps.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 | atapi | The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did
not respond within the timeout period.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 | Cdrom | The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad
block.

you should try updating your firmware. old cd burner do have a tendency not
to work to well with xp

How do I do that?

Go to the website of the manufacturer of the drive and see if they have
a firmware update available. BTW, you might want to repost with a
better explanation of your problem. You're writing at 4x, which
indicates use of an older drive. Like all electromechanical devices,
they go bad sooner or later.

If the speed/performance has dropped, check the appropriate
channel controller (Primary/Secondary) in Device Manager, IDE
ATAPI controllers - Advanced (Tab). Look to see if the device
is running at UDMA mode 2. On errors, XP can step back the
operating mode of a device, to avoid errors.

Primary IDE Channel:
Device0
Device Type - Auto Detection
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra MDA mode 5

Device1
Device Type - Auto Detection
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Not Applicable

Secondary IDE Channel:
Device0
Device Type - Auto Detection
Transfer Mode - PIO Only
Current Transfer Mode - PIO Mode

Device1
Device Type - Auto Detection
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra MDA Mode 2

That's what I saw.

What's device 0 on the secondary channel?

I don't know for sure, but I don't think that's the problem. I just need some
help writing to my CDs since each writing speed causes a different problem. I
don't know what the website of the manufacture is, so maybe I should start
there first; looking for a firmware update.
