Windows explorer use to give me the name of the CD that was in the CD
drive. Now it no longer does this. It shows no name at all. Yup, I
probably pressed the wrong button last week. How do I go about
unpressing that button, or in other words, how do I re-establish that
naming procedure.

You didn't put in a Sony BMG music cd did you? You might try creating a text
file on the desktop named $sys$test.txt to see if you have the Sony rootkit.
After you create the file and rename it, refresh your desktop and see if the
file disappears. If it does, you have the rootkit. In case you're not
familiar, it's a nasty little piece of spyware that hooks itself to the
kernel, and among other things, replaces your CD-Rom drivers with sony's
version. Any time I hear of someone having CD-Rom issues I try this first.
If that file disappears, then not seeing your CD names is the least of your
worries.

Start | run | REGEDIT <enter> Goto
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

Double click on AutoRun and make sure it's set to 1
(If 0 Explorer will not refresh the CD)

Mine is 1, however, the CD name in My computer still not change when I
change CD

Besides, I tried right click|properties|volume|properies|populate, I
can see the correct
cd name displayed in the text box of th edialog window

however, when I click 'ok' and get back to My Computer, it still
doesn't show correct CD name. Gee what a XP?>"<

Microsoft's Autoplay repair wizard _might_ fix this problem. See this post
from Alex Nichol, MVP.

<quote>

It may be a fouled up autoplay setting, so that the autoinsert
notification is being lost. Microsoft people have written an unofficial
fix up tool for Autoplay. Without great confidence, I suggest you try
it - it is not on a MSoft site, but can be downloaded from
