Is there a software package that will call for another CD when the
files to be written are too large for one CD?

Do you mean "spanning" over multiple disk? No disk creation tool will let you
do that. However, several "backup" software can write to CDs or DVDs and
request the next disk.

I've found that most backup software that is designed to write to RW or
R's, will also handle changing CDs. I use an older copy of what was
Seagate backup program, later changed to Stomp backup, and goodness
knows what it is now. I think nero will even do this.
I've got a ton of CDRW's downstairs that I used to use for this, but an
external drive for 60$ is sooooooooo much easier. And flipping CD's is
no fun. Think about it. Especially when XP came into this mix and
terabyte drives came around. I use one or two CDRW's now for testing
ISO images. (sorry, not into virtual drives yet).

There are other ways to do this, and I'm just tossing out ideas since
you gave little reason for it. Winrar will rar files and split them
into a specified size, like 650Megs. Then you can burn each file then
to a single CD. Its not fancy, but it works in a pinch.

Why not use a blank DVD instead?
Mike.

Well a DVD holds at least 5x more info than a cd. If the OP is just writing
data files, then a dvd should be fine.

Easy CD Creator will. Not only that, it tells you in advance how many disks
you will need.

Easy CD Creator ( I use older Ver 6.0 ) has it's own encapsulation
process, so files larger than a single 4.7 Gigabyte DVD will span a
multiple disk set. The only downside is you need Easy CD Creator
to retrieve the data as it's in a proprietary format.

Yes, I keep the copy of a backup utility I use on 3 CD's to make sure I
have that good copy to restore when I reload. Else the backups I
wrote are useless. I've just recently started writing to a 8gig usb
with a simple batch file that just xcopies selected items/folders.
Paranoia

I think this is the answer I'm looking for - although I never thought
about using a backup program. The purpose is to archive my many JPG's
(photos from my digital camera). I have about 2GB of them and want to
save them in their native format (I don't yet have a DVD RW machine).

The other problem I have is that the filenames are coded (and not
identified by date). Anybody know how to sort be date created?

Rubbish. This has been a standard feature of Roxio disc burning products
for some considerable time. Easy Media Creator (the latest line) does this
by default if the files exceed the size of one disk. It should be noted
however, that the last file on one disk actually spans onto the next and it
can only be reassembled on a machine that has the Roxio software installed.

Give a look at bulk rename utility. It may have features to read exif
data and use it.
Never heard of this kind of utility. Would you recommend one or point
me in the right direction? Thank you.

This is great!!! However, my files are JPG photos and I wouldn't want
the last file split. I would want the option to fit as many full files
on one CD - then call for another empty CD. Any suggestions?

Yes, CD burning software such as Roxio Easy DVD Creator provides the tools to record information. It allows you to copy data to the disk and create a bootable CD. CD copying is also supported unless the source disks are copy protected by content protection schemes. If you create a CD and your data is too large then the completion of one disk it require another disk.
