I recently installed a new cd/dvd writer on windows XP.
In Device Manager it is covered by a yellow circle with a
black exclamation mark. After trying to upgrade the
driver, message reads driver corrupted error 39.
Microsoft support tells you to edit the registry by
removing the upper and lower filters. this does nothing.
any other suggestions?

1st go to the manufacturer's website and see if htere's an updated driver.
It doesn't matter if you just bought the drive or not they sometimes sit on
shelves for months.
Instead of trying to update the driver try deleting it and rebooting.
This way Windows will redetect the drive and install the proper driver.
Use the HAVE CD option if you downloaded an updated driver or if your using
the software provided with the device.
If it is truly a corrupt driver problem then with any luck the driver being
reinstalled won't be corrupt.
