When i change cd's or DVD's the system will not recegnize the new one until
the system is rebooted. I can even eject the one that is reading and close
the door and it will not recognize it. This only started happening after I
reformatted and reloaded my system.

I ran into a similar issue recently that I think I have
at least partially figured out. If the CD (or DVD) that
I am looking at has the same label as the next one (I
had several with backup images for the drive that I
had burned with NERO), windows could not tell when
I changed the CD -- refresh (F5), closing the window
then re-opening it etc, kept showing me the directory
from the first disk (although it was the second in there).
If I put a disk in that had a different label, then it would
"refresh" and show me the correct directory. I have not
had more time to play with it, but was able to duplicate
it on two machines (both running XP Pro, SP2). I could
take the second disk (that showed the directory of the
first) out of that drive and put it in a different drive which
then showed the correct directory for that (the second)
disk. If I then took the second out and put the first in
that one, it still showed the directory of the second disk.
I did spend some time googling around and found some
others with the same experience, but no one seemed to
have any answers. Every time I have run into this, it has
been disks I have burned and I suspect set the label the
same.

Suggestions:

Open My Computer, right click on the CD Rom in question,
Properties/Hardware/Properties/Volumes/Populate.

Other than that, this problem can occur if you are using Folder view in
Windows Explorer. The view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view
in Windows Explorer.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer. And/or Do not use Folder view in Windows
Explorer.
