My CD/DVD ROM (D:) and my CD-RW (E:) do not appear either in MY COMPUTER nor in the device manager. My E: drive does not even open at all. My D: does open but it does not seem to read the CD's. It is as if they were never on my system. Someone please help.

This worked for me. Shut down your computer, open the
case, remove power from your optical drives. Restart your
computer and after it has completely started, shut down
again, reattach power to yur optical drives and restart
your computer. This should get everything up and running
again.

It could very well be a hardware problem: CD drives stopped working.
There is also a possibility of cables disconnecting from the CD drives.
Shut down your computer and disconnect it from the power outlet.
Then open the case and verify if the cables (both power and data) are
properly attached to your CD/DVD drive and your CD-RW drive.

Hope that helps.

Yuriy
