I just installed a new DVD burner (HP DVD writer 530i)on
my P4 running XP home. It worked the first day I
installed it, then the next day when I fired up the
computer neither the DVD drive or the DVD-Rom drive
(toshiba something) were working (not detected as
removeable media drives). I did some research and found
that there was a problem in the registry (code 19) for
both drives. I think I need to clear everything and do a
re-instal of windows. But if the drives don't now will I
be able to install windows after I blow the whole thing
away with a format c:? What should I do??

I would open your case back up and re-check all of the cables first, then the jumpers
on the back of the drives.
Next I would check: right-click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/DeviceMgr/
to see if there were any yellow exclamation marks.
Last resort, I would hook it back up the way it was, reboot, to rule out a prob with your sys.
I wouldn't reload operating sys so quickly,... I don't think it's your os.

I checked all the jumpers and cables and everything is
good in the case. In device manager there are explination
marks by both drives and that's where I've found the
problem with the registry. I already tried to putting
everything back the way it was, (replace the dvd drive
with the original cd-rw drive) and then the cd-rw drive as
well as the dvd-rom drive don't show up and have
explanation marks by them in device manager. I then
backed up my registry and took out everything to do with
cd drives and restarted. Then the cd drives were not
found in explorer and in device manager they were under an
unknow device deal with explanation marks. So I imported
my old registry, but that didn't change anything when I
restarted. I think i'm screwed and need to start from
scratch.
