Any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Essentially, I have a Sony CD-Rom drive (only 6 months old) that was working
perfectly, until today. It has a drive letter assignment and even shows up
under "my computer." I checked the hardware status -- and it says working
properly. I tried everything on the XP help and also the CD troubleshooting
guide in the knowledge base.

The trouble is -- when I insert any disk (music or data), the light turns
on, there's a bit of whirring, and nothing happens. Any software I open (such
as Windows Media Player) says there's no disk in the drive. And when I open
up the drive in Windows Explorer -- it's blank.

I tried removing the drive and reinstalling upon reboot -- and same problem.

Please Windows experts -- any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

I am not an expert but sounds like a hardware failure issue. When you say
there a "whirring" when you insert the disk is that a new noise or is it the
cd spin up (loading and reading.) You generally shouldnt hear much when cds
are inserted Try looking in your system log for any errors about your cd. I
suspect you will find some error 7 or 51.

One more question did you change anything else on your system just prior to
this happening? i.e. install any software or download updates or anything
related or unrelated to media.

The good news since your sony cd is only 6 months old you can call Sony and
get an RMA (return merchandise Authorization) and they will send you a
replacement for free on the warrenty.

Hope this helps Good Luck

The only thing I change was add a hard drive (but the CD drive worked after I
did that -- so I assume that's not the issue)....
