Well, after disconnecting and reconnecting my "D" drive (cd), it still
is not showing up. Is it safe to say that it has completely failed, and
I should replace it? LOL!
What do I look for when replacing it? Any tips are appreciated! Thanks!!

try this first :>

Take a look www.dougknox.com, click on Windows XP fixes over on the left
then look in the right-hand column for "Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer"

let us know ...

Yeah, I just tried it and rebooted. Nothing. =(
It's still not showing up. Is this unusual for a computer that's only
barely 3 years old?

Hi Sandy,

Sorry to say that most all Optical(CD/DVD) drives only come with a 1 year
warranty. It is normal to lose an optical drive anywhere from 1 yr on up and
even before that. Once you buy a new drive. I suggest getting a DVDRW they
are so cheap these days that it doesn't make much sense to get anything
lower. On the back of the drive where you plug the cords in there will be a
jumper block that you need to set properly. Most come default on SL/Slave.
Look on your old CD-rom and just copy where its jumper is set to that way you
know you will have it set properly. Also the Ribbon Cable going to the drive
will have one end of it striped usually with a pink stripe this signifies the
1 pin which should be shown on the back of the CD-Rom Drive you need to match
it up with the one wire to the one pin. Most cables are keyed and can only
go in one way but older ribbon cables are not keyed. Good Luck

Ok, thank you! =)
Would I still be able to burn cd's? Sorry if this is a silly
question..LOL! Or what is the difference between burning cd's and
dvd's? Thanks a lot!!

I got it all worked out. It was an error code 41, and fixed it in a
snap! Thanks for all of your help! =)
