Hi,

I would describe myself as an advanced home user but this issue is really
tripping me up. I've Googled answers for a few hours today and tried
several other things but nothing is working. Maybe someone here can offer
something I've not yet seen or tried.

Just last night my CD burner won't burn (photos, I have not tried music in a
few weeks). I am getting the "cannot complete the CD writing wizard"
message box with options to eject, delete, or save files, etc. I've tried
manually and automatically messing with the IMAPI settings in the Services
box (ran "services.msc /s") and am not making a dent.

No third party CD burner, just Windows (XP of course).

Also, the CD player is intermittently not recognizing the CD, sometimes it
will eject and sometimes not. The light (on the CD drive) is on and then
not on, responds or doesn't. Is it fried?

I then went into looking up any driver downloads for anything I have but
don't think anything applies - everything looked to be up to date.

I can provide more detail if you realize I am not doing so right now, just
ask the right questions! Trust me, I've been at this for some time, but I
just have gotten to so many dead ends I am beginning to lose track of the
true problem!

Thanks for any input.

In My Computer, or in Windows Explorer, right click the burner. Choose
Properties>Recording Tab. Ensure that the box is checked to enable the
drive to record. Check in Device Manager to see if it reports a problem
with the drive.

Done and done, no problems indicated.

"Device working properly" - my foot!

Hi Shel,

You may have already tried this, as it's the first thing that came to my
head when reading it. The fact that the problem is intermittent and seems to
have a mind of it's own smacks to me of a loose connection. Try opening up
the case and seeing if your cables are loose in the back. Check the IDE and
ther power cable. Be sure to switch the computer off first AND unplug it
before you do this. Even if they seem to be securely in, take them out and
give them a blow to get rid of any dust that may have (over time) found it's
way in.
