Cd and Rewritable gone

On my computer my two drives seem to be gone, i put in a cd and it does not
read in either one, help

They not only seem to be gone, they are definitely gone.. However, does
the BIOS see them? If the BIOS cannot detect the drives, is the cable fully
seated?
These two things are elementary checks that one should make before posting
to a newsgroup.
