Ever since upgrading to XP Pro from XP Home, I can't use my cd or dvd
reader/writers. What do I need to do? Reinstall the drivers? Thanks.

Hi,

Do you see them in Windows Explorer?

They are both showing up in Windows Explorer...I just got the DVD
working...don't know what I did...the CD Rom now reads manufactured discs but
it won't read any of my backed up data that I so badly need. So that's what
I am faced with now. Just anything that I have saved on a CD won't be read.
Isn't that weird?

Hi Jules,

Possibly the CD lens is just clogged. Pick up a lens cleaner disk and run it
on the drive. These commonly available disks can be found in most stores
that sell CD's.

I have done a few cleanings and it didn't do the trick. I went into the
device manager and there is an item called Multimedia Audio Controller with
an "!" over it. I'm assuming that has something to do with it? Maybe?...

The Multimedia Audio Controller is your sound card.

When you upgraded to XP, did you first remove old burning software that
was incompatible with XP? Did you run the XP Upgrade Advisor first? You
need to upgrade your drivers for all your hardware to ones for XP,
including your motherboard. Get drivers from:

1. The card mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

If you don't know what hardware is in your computer:

1. Look at the paperwork you got when you bought the computer; or
2. If an OEM machine, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
and look up the components;
3. Use a free system inventory program like Everest Home or Belarc
