Had a sudden and unexpected 'disabling' of Checkdisk in XP Pro and could
not resolve it! Carey was on the money with diagnosis! ZoneAlarm 5.0 Free
is the culprit.. Thank You, Thank You, Carey. I had tried every command line
anyone could come-up with; checkdisk would NOT run on reboot.
Note that I reset to, Disabled on Startup, the True Vector Engine in
Services (Administrative Tools in Control Panel) from Starting, Shut down ZA
and then rebooted; CHKDSK came back and ran just fine. I have used the Free
ZA ver. 5 for awhile with no problem, until yesterday. I HAD stopped ZA and
tried, but it Starts when i rebooted, so that didn't work (obviously)..
Disabling True Vector Engine must be the key!

On the contrary, that is the proper way to use a newsgroup. More people
would have their questions answered if they understood how newsgroups work.

.....While i know there is a proper way to post either new messages or
replies, ultimately making for 'space' being efficiently utilized, I
don't see any of the 'buttons' or designations in my e-mail interface that
you have indicated.. Perhaps 'across the pond' with whatever e-mail client
you use, these are on your window, but not mine. In no way would i
consciously overload this, or any other newsgroup, since I have found them
very helpful over time, and with due respect for Administrators of these
groups (you are sounding like one of those) I have noted your pedantic
instruction/admonition to me. Perhaps you should consider writing a book on
Newsgroup Protocol; I merely wanted to be certain Carey Frisch MVP saw my

I opologize.. On a lighter side of this issue; Who gives a rats ass!

Thank you and I'm pleased I was able to help!

If you learn how newsgroups work, perhaps you'll learn about this: plonk.

My mistake on this occasion. I assumed you were using a web based news reader because so many of these mistakes are by those using that method. That is why you do not see the buttons referred to in my post. However, the point about replying to the thread or conversation still applies to someone like yourself who is using Outlook Express as a news reader. To reply just place the cursor on the last message in the thread or the particular message you wish to reply to and select Reply to Group. Observance of this procedure substantially improves the prospect that the intended recipient of your message will actually read it.

In posting my original message I was endeavouring to help you, and others who might read my message, to communicate more effectively. In no way am I an administrator. I am just someone who is trying to make a positive contribution. There are no administrators so far as I am aware posting to any Microsoft newsgroups. The MVP's, I am not one, are not administrators.

Hi Gerry,

I see you are using Outlook Express. I determined this by right-clicking on
the post in my OE news reader and choosing Properties. On the Details tab
the newsreader is usually indicated in the headers that appear there. If
anyone is using Microsoft's web interface to these groups then "Microsoft
CDO for Windows 2000" appears in the headers as in Anon's post to this
thread. I'm not sure what the headers say if a post is made through Google
or any non-Microsoft web-based news interface.

Sandman's original post to this thread was posted via Outlook Express 6.

Did you read my message in the context of the whole thread? How do you think I worked out what my original mistake was?
