Card reader/writer

I have one of these multi-card reader/writers + USB2 port fitted to my PC Win XP home.
Now and again either the drives appear in Explorer but don't recognise an inserted card or the 4 drives dissapear altogether from explorer, aftera reboot they sometimes reappear , can someone tell me what's going on ?

Two things to try...

Plug the reader DIRECTLY into the PC's USB slot

Leave the reader plugged in at all times

Leave a card in the reader at all times
 
Thanks, good idea, but the card reader fitted on the front
of the PC box is internally wired, but the idea of leaving
a card inserted is a good thought, I will try it.
