Cant write to USB Flash diive

I have a MP3 player with 256mb that I cant get to delete the files on.
I can add files but not remove. The device is write protected is the
message I get when I try to delete files. The unit came with no
driver. Windows XP installs the flash-drive driver for it. I just
cant remove files from it. What am I doing wrong?
 
Is there a small slider switch on the side of the drive. Usually one
position locks the drive to stop deleting by mistake.

Can you delete files by the player itself (when it is not connected to PC)?
If not: try to find a format utility for flash drives on Internet and
reformat the drive.
