I am able to view web pages using their ip (i.e. I can get to Yahoo using
66.94.230.39) but if I type the dns name (i.e. www.yahoo.com) I get a 'Page
cannot be displayed' type of message. I can't remember the fix! This is
happening on a XP Pro laptop here at work connecting to our work network
which runs Window SBS 2003.

Thanks in advance for any help

Boze,

DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Is the laptop trying to use DNS, connecting to a domain, and access both domain
resources, as well as the internet?

1) Ensure that the laptop is configured to use the domain DNS server. If you're
using DHCP on your LAN, the DHCP server should point to the DNS server.

2) Ensure the domain DNS server is configured to permit dynamic updates. Ensure
the DNS server points to itself as a DNS server.

3) For internet resolution, specify your ISP's DNS server not on the laptop, or
on the DHCP server, but in the forwarders tab of the DNS server.

Thank you Chuck! I'll give those a try

No, the laptop is not trying to access the domain, just the internet, at
least at this point. And it DID work previously, this is a new problem, if
that makes a difference. The last change was adding a DeLorme mapping
program. I did a system restore but that didn't fix it.

Will let you know how it goes

Tried
- netsh winsock reset catalog
- LSP Fix
- Winsock XP Fix
- netsh int ip reset [path] resetlog.txt (found resetlog.txt in 2
locations.. reset both)
- netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt
problem remains the same.

Since the laptop is not trying to access the domain files.. just use the
connection to get to the internet, I didn't change anything listed about
that YET. Am leary of changing things on our server for fear that I'd mess
up the ability of our all our other computers (desktops) to access the
internet... they're working perfectly. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your help

Boze,

Provide ipconfig information for the laptop, and for one working computer, and
lets see where the differences are.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

This post about comparing IP Configs got me comparing DNS settings on the
working and non-working computers. I saw that the working computer had a
preferred and alternate DNS server. Put those values in the non-working
computer.. it now works great!

Thanks so much Chuck. My boss leaves on a business trip in 2 days so really
needed to get this going

Boze,

That's great news. Thanks for updating us. Any idea what 192.168.0.9 is, and
how it got into just the configuration on the working computer? You might want
to try and answer that, for future reference.
