I just restored my computer with a new hard drive. reinstalled all software
that came with it and my legit home edition of windows XP. I did several of
the windows updates incluiding Direct X and SP2. after restarting a few
times like i have to, i went to update again and now its saying i have to
validate my version of windows which for some reason it cant do. It then
tries an alternative way of doing it which is also a failure. I looked up
the FAQ stuff and its saying stuff about proxys and turning off firewalls,
etc... I have done nothing special to my computer other than installing my
antivirus stuff. I run through a networked DSL modem and things are pretty
basic with my setup. What else do i need to do?

I think i remember something about activating it when i first started windows
after the restore but i must have skipped it or something. is there some way
i can get back to that? The validation thing im getting is after trying to
download updates. I looked on the MS site for some kind of phone number like
you mentioned to phone validate but not finding it.

Hi Greg ive have seen this problem many times after re-installing or
repairing xp, what you need to do is validate via the telephone, this should
be an option on the activation screen, follow the instructions given. If the
telephone service says that your code is invalid you should have the option
to speak to a csr, just explain you have re-installed the software on the
same pc the software was originally ship with and they should provide you
with a new code.
