Can't 'upgrade' to Win XP using my XP disk

Jeez, one problem after another..... I am having trouble with opening .exe's,
when I click on any .exe, the silly Microsoft error reporting thing pops up,
I choose to report the error, and then it closes teh .exe before it installs.
I have tried a few different fixes, none of which worked. So, I wanted to
take drastic measures and reinstall Windows. I put the disk in the drive, it
fires up, I select to install Windows, then it says "cannot access so-and-so
file it is in use", so I restarted the computer, booted from the XP disk, and
chose to "Repair the installed Windows XP", and then it asks me for the
"Administrator password", so I entered my password, as I am the ONLY one who
uses my computer, there are no other user accounts and I am by default the
admin, and it says it is not a valid password, I tried 3 times, and then it
said "failed to verify password 3 times, press enter to restart", then it
restarts the computer. OH MY GOD, I try to fix one problem and I run into
more and more problems. Can anyone help me out, primarily with the problem
with installing anything? Keep in mind, I am the only user, always have been,
and I am the admin.

You might have an administrator account , but do you log-in as The
Administrator? If not, then just try leaving the password blank.

First you can't install XP or use the CD repair function by running the
CD from within windows. Second, when booting from the CD you don't want
to choose the first repair option as you did because it probably won't
help your issue. But for your information the password it was asking
for, to enter the recovery console which is what is invoked when
choosing the first R for repair, is the password for the built in
Administrator account. When XP Pro was first installed it asked to set
a password for that account. You need to enter whatever password was
assigned. This is not normally the password for the subsequent account
you created with admin privileges.

That said, when booting from the XP CD don't take the first R. You need
to do a repair install which is offered later. See this link for how
to do it.

Let's not start *another* very long thread here. You really need to take
the machine to a professional. You are in the wrong place to reinstall
and/or repair Windows - you are in the Recovery Console.

See these links for how to do a Repair Install (which I don't think is
going to work in your case), a Clean Install, and what you will need to
reinstall Windows.

you will need on-hand)
