can't share files/printer over network

Alright, this is my situation:
I have run the network set up wizard (several times) and cannot access the
shared files or printer. Each computer has a unique name and the same
workgroup name and they are all running XP home but the computer in question
is runnign the 2002 version while I think the others are running 2000. I know
that the network works because I can share files between the other computers.
I can ping their IP addresses but not their names and they cannot ping me by
either. I also cannot ping myself. When I ran the diagnostic provided in
windows help it comes up as failed becasue I cannot ping my own IP. I have
also used the netshell utility to reset the TCP/IP stack with no result.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a
start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

When I ran browstat on stark2, at first it came up as not active. I ran it
again a little after and it came up as active (see log).
The problem computer is a laptop however it is currently on lan, not
wireless becasue I was trying fix this myself and a friend suggested I should
do it through lan becasue wireless may cause another layer of problems.
Should I continue on lan or switch to wireless?
Thanks so much, for your quick response.

OK, IPConfig on all 3 computers identify no problem reportable on JOLAPTOP.
# JOLAPTOP is getting DHCP settings.
# JOLAPTOP is on the same subnet as the others.
# JOLAPTOP has the same Node Type - Unknown, which is acceptable.
# No computers show any signs of gratuitous protocols.

JOLAPTOP simply isn't picking up the master browser. There are 3 conditions
which I know of which are known to cause this condition.
# LSP / Winsock problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>
# Misconfigured / overlooked personal firewall.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
# Registry setting restrictanonymous.

You are welcome to peruse my troubleshooting guides, and see if anything in
there makes you think of another clue which may not have occurred to us.

I do not think it is a winsock problem becasue the symptoms described are
loss of internet connectivity or garbled names. the names that do com up are
fine and I have exellent internet connection frommy laptop. When I set it up
to begin with that was no problem at all.
My firewall settings are identical to the ones on the other computers. I use
Norton 2005. But for good measure I turned Norton off and switched to the
windows firewall (file sharing enabled). Still no good.
Restictanonymous value is and has been zero. Also the other registry value
that you mentioned in your guide(it was called Hidden in lanmanserver) is
also as it should be.
I can access shared files if I type the IP address in "Run" but I can't do
it with the name so I thought that sounded like a name resolution problem but
I have run what you suggest on your website and it is still no good.
Browstat still says that the laptop is not active. Is there anything I need
to do to make is active?
Thanks so much for your time

You have a difficult situation. Norton / Symantec products are known here for
being difficult to manage, and to un install. NPF is known for not accepting
being disabled; sometimes you have to either configure it properly or un install
it carefully, following procedures from Symantec (and not just the un install
wizard in Control Panel - Add / Remove Programs either).

On the other hand, LSP / Winsock problems are pretty versatile too. The
examples that you referred to are the best known ones. But Winsock can
potentially affect all parts of TCP/IP networking. Do some reading about
Winsock. I'll start you off.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winsock>
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...wcecomm5/html/wce50conwinsockarchitecture.asp>

But let's look at this from the other side too. How many computers total are we
looking at? Make sure that the problem is with JOLAPTOP, that can't see
BONUSROOM. Look at BONUSROOM - any chance its security settings are protecting
it from JOLAPTOP? What's different about JOLAPTOP?

I appologize for not stating it, but I had run all winsock help programs you
listed on the site. One of the programs (first one i think) gave me a reply
that said there was nothing to chenge. I rebooted after each run and tried to
access the computers in my network by name. The error message is still
"network path not found." Something that was odd was that two of the programs
gave me the option of backing up the registry. When I clicked on this option
the program wanted to start doing it but failed to complete the backup.

JOLAPTOP is a new computer (purchased Friday) that I wanted to connect to
the network so that I could tranfer my files. There are 4 other computers
that access the network and share files and printers without problems. I am
only able to access two of them at the moment (other two are password
protected but i know they work). When I got the laptop I ran the network
wizard and ran into the previously described problems.

I use an ActionTec modem/hub to connect but there was nothign I had to do
for the other computers to give them access. osaid that I should check about
bonusroom's security settings. What kind of security settings are you
referring to and where can I find them?

problem fixed!!

While Norton Antivirus and firewall were fine, I overlooked that this
computer came with two other applications called Norton Internet Sercurity
and Norton Security Center. I went into Norton Internet Security and put the
network on the trused list there too. That solved it.

Thanks a lot

Excellent. Norton Personal Firewall (Norton Internet Security) again. Good job
on configuring it. Thanks for letting us know.
