I am trying to set up a small home network between two
computers running Windows XP home edition. I have a
netgear wireless router and usb adapter. The router and
adapter are working OK because I can access the internet
from both computers.

I ran the network set up wizard on one of the computers
and used the disk it created to setup the other
computer. I then set drives on each computer as shared.

The problem is that whenever I try to access a share
drive on one computer from the other I get the following
message:

\\<Computer Name> is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contanct the
administrator of the server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The network path was not found.

Any suggestions on where my error is?

Thanks.

Do you have the same Workgroup name for each PC? Try running the Network Wizard again on each machine. Check the IP address of each machine and see if they can ping each other. Open Command Prompt and type
ping 192.168.0.10 or whatever the ip address of the machine you want to ping. To get the IP address, at the Command type ipconfig. Also before you do anythng else, ping 127.0.0.1 in order to see if your machines are TCP/IP components are configured correctly. If you do not get a successful reply doing that. then go no farther until TCP/IP is configured correctly.

127.0.0.1 from both machines. I can also ping the IP
Address of Machine B from Machine A but if I try to ping
Machine A from Machine B, it times out.

Hans-Georg, if I wasn't such a cranky old lady I'd tell ya I LOVE
YOU...lol. I've been working for 2 days (and most nights) on getting
my 98pc to access my xp pro pc. I had ping, could access the 98pc
from xp....but could NOT get the other machine to connect, although it
showed the xp pc in the workgroup and everything. I went to the page
you suggested and lo and behold as I followed it step by step (most of
it for the 90th time).....I got to "disable dns server" and
VOILA!!!!!! So thank you so very much for sharing this!!!!

Danke,
Betsy
