Windows Mail was working totally fine. Started it up one day couldn't send
(recieve ok) got the following error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.tpg.com.au', Server: 'mail.tpg.com.au', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Don't have any anti-virus installed.
Did happend another time but can't remember what I did to make it work ok.
Suspect that it could be due to the setting "compact the database on shutdown
after X runs" was set to 100, which would probably be about the last time it
happened. Have now turned it off

When you got that send failure, were you sending from your home
ISP connection? (TPG Internet)

thanks for your info Gary, but no am using a different service provider in
Canada. Have been using this provider successfully for the last 2months. When
error occured previously was using a different provider (I'm travelling
through Canada). Have also tried resetting cable router & disabling Windows
Firewall. thx

The problem with traveling away from home is that the service providing your
temporary connection to the Internet is not going to let you connect to
your home ISP's SMTP server on port 25. This is known as a port 25 block,
and is a common anti-spam measure throughout the ISP industry.

If your home ISP does not offer SMTP on an alternate port (other than 25),
then you should get a free account with Gmail and use it for your travel
sending chores. Gmail does SMTP on port 465.

thanks Gary, I'll check with my home ISP if an alt port is possible. Is there
a way that I could check if the port is blocked by the ISP (Shaw, I think)
I'm connecting through? thanks again. Andrew

I'm connecting through? Strange also that it has worked for two months
without problem and now it's stopped (with the Canadian provider). thanks
again. Andrew

Sudden problems with previously working email strongly
indicate you are using McAfee or Norton anti Vista/Virus.
Get rid of it and use free AVG or Avast instead.
note. Email scanning is not required.
Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0

Sorry not using any antivirus. Installed Advast this morning (after problem
had occured) - email scanning has been disabled.

All responsible ISPs will block any attempt to make a port 25 connection
to any server except the mail server they provide. This policy is now
required in order to remain in good standing with the anti-spam authorities.
If you know how to use telnet, you can test your port 25 connection with it.
