Until recently i was able to send and receive files using
windows messenger. Then overnight no file transfers
either way. I changed to msn 6 messenger and still no
transfers allowed. I also just installed a wireless
network hub to my computer but after I lost ability to
transfer files. Does anyone know what happened????
Pleas let me know... it's bugging me to no end!!!!!

Greetings Trekker,

Using MSN Messenger 6 with other people that are using MSN Messenger 6, should allow you to
send files (albeit slowly), as a last resort, it can send the file directly through the
Messenger server, bypassing any router, firewall problems you might have.

However, in order to send files (and quickly, in regards to what I said above) through your
wireless router (which I think is what you're referring to when you say "hub") with MSN
Messenger 5 (or 6 to people using non-MSN Messenger 6 clients), the router will need to
support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). A number of router manufacturers now have UPnP
firmware updates for their router products, if you can't find one, reply back with your
router manufacturer name and model, and we can see if there is an update available.

Note that UPnP file transfer is only available in MSN Messenger clients currently, Windows
Messenger 4.x does not have UPnP file transfer support.

Also, due to the way Messenger receives files, any problem receiving files is most likely on
the side of the person sending (when you receive, you connect to your contact and download
the file). This is probably due to either the contact sending having a firewall that isn't
allow Messenger to connect to the correct ports, or not using a router with support for
Messenger file transfer, or an UPnP enabled router and MSN Messenger 5/6 (as I said above for
you).

Realistically, if you continue to have problems, simply make sure that both and your contacts
have MSN Messenger 6 installed, which should get around most of these problems (albeit the
transfers will be slow).
