whenever I try replying to an email....i get an error message that says:

"the connection to the server was interupted. if the problem continues,
please contact your server administrator or ISP. the server reponded: 421
out006.verizon.net Lost Connection to [141.149.XXX.YY]"

for the ip address, i replaced the last numbers with letters to protect the
actual address. i am behind a linksys firewall, but that has never mattered
and i have a second computer that i can use outlook on with no problem. on
this computer though...the message just gets stuck in the outbox. if i
strip away all of the body and try sending, no problem. if i go into the
account details and click on "Test Account Settings", everything works
except for "send test message". for that, i get an error message saying
that it was unable to send test message. Please verify the email address
field. any ideas what could be wrong....i am going nuts!??!

Do you have any anti-virus software installed on the machine that's having
the problem? That has been known to interfere with Outlook's connections.
Try disabling it if you have it, and if the problem goes away, check with
the vendor for an update to fix the problem.

i have tried that with no luck. i have mcaffee anti-virus online and i
disabled it. after disabling it, the same problem continued. anything else
that could cause this. i have already uninstalled and reinstalled the
software.

Looking at the error message you're getting, your ISPs server is closing the
connection. This error message is described in the Internet standard for
SMTP servers:

421 <domain> Service not available, closing transmission channel
(This may be a reply to any command if the service knows it
must shut down)

What version of Outlook do you have? If it's Outlook 2002, do you have
multiple accounts on the same ISP? Outlook 2002 tries to download from all
your accounts simultaneously, so if you do have multiple accounts at the
same ISP Outlook will try to make multiple connections to their server.
Some ISPs seem to limit the number of connections they'll accept from one
computer to a very small number (like 1). It may be that when Outlook tries
to connect to download from the second account, the server shuts down your
connection on the first account.

If this is indeed your problem, the easiest way to fix it would be to
upgrade to Outlook 2003 - because of problems surrounding ISPs limiting the
number of connections, Outlook 2003 will download accounts that are on the
same server one-at-a-time. Your other option is to put each of the accounts
that share an ISP in different send/receive groups, and do a send/receive on
each group manually (in essence, doing by hand what Outlook 2003 does
automatically).
