Can't send mail to hotmail without Exchange Server?

Hi all,
Hope someone can shed some light on this one:
Running Outlook 2003 on WinXPP.
Outlook has 1 account in Cached Exchange Mode to Exchange
2000 server.
Outlook also has 1 account to Hotmail using HTTP.
Everything works well, except..
If I'm not connected to the Exchange Server (working at
home) and I compose a new message - I select the send-
through Hotmail setting using the accounts button. When
I click send.. the outlook widget in the taskbar tells me
that it's trying to connect to the exchange server.
It never sends the message to hotmail - no errors either.
However, if I connect my VPN so my Exchange Server is
connected, then the message goes straight through hotmail.
Sorry for the long description, but it seems strange to
me that it would require a connection to an exchange
server, just to send a message via hotmail.

Thanks,
- Andrew

Try taking the Exchange account out of your send receive group for offline
use.

Use the following steps.

1. Tools, Send/Recieve, Send/Recieve Settings, Define Send/Receive Groups
2. Create a new group, name it offline.
3. When the Send/Recieve Settings dialog comes up, click the Hotmail account
and make sure that Include the selected account in this group is checked.
Click the Exchange account and make sure that checkbox is NOT checked.
4. Click OK
5. Back in the Send/Receive Groups box, select the newly created group and
choose to only use it when Outlook is offline.
6. Now select the group that was there originally and clear the checkbox in
the Offline section.

See if that helps.
