Can't see one of my computers on my network

I have a home network with several computers hooked up through a Llinksys
Router acting as a DHCP server for the network. All of the computers have
obtained addresses and can access the internet. All but one can see the other
computers on the network. The one (a laptop) cannot see or be seen by any of
the other computers on the network but can access the internet thought the
router/cable modem. Even if I try to ping this computer's IP address it is
still not seen. All of the computers are running either XP or XP Pro. The
laptop computer not seen is running XP Pro. This particular laptop was
succesfully working on my network at work but at home is where I have the
problem. What do I need to do to get this computer seen on my home network by
the other computers??? I assume that it is a configuration problem of some
kind but I just cannot figure it out.

Ok big difference, your office may be using WINS - which is a Windows
resolution naming service. In essence, this turns IP addresses into NetBIOS
names but without the overhead of installing NetBIOS or NETBeui on the
network. This is why it might be working in the office but not at home.
Also, your office may be using Active Directory.

Also check the laptop to see if this has SP2 installed - it may have
disabled Ping and File and Print Sharing on the firewall.

Regards
Paul.

Larry,

A misconfigured (not configured) firewall would be a likely cause.

If the problem is not a firewall, I'd look for a browser conflict, another very
common cause of "I can't see all the computers from all the other computers".
The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
