Can't see computers on network

I have spent 7 hours networking two computers - one hard
wire connected, one wireless connected through a linksys
router. Using network wizard on my hard wired "main"
computer I get an error message in Spooler Subsystem App,
(spoolsv.exe), wizard continues to finish, but after it's
done I cannot see or access any computer on "My Network
Places" and I am not allowed access when I click on "view
workgroup computers". I have rerun wizard and been
through installations both as connected through a gateway
and a hub and been through troubleshooter as well. Why?
On the laptop I had similar messages until I ran network
wizard designating the laptop as "other", ie through a
hub, and now I can see the laptop when I click on "view
workgroup computers", still doesn't come up on "mY
network places" though. Any thoughts? Does this
consistent message running the network wizard indicate a
faulty Windows XP program?

I went thru this identical configuration with my brother
in-law tonight. Over the phone we were able to get his
working in about 40 minutes.

1. On the advanced tab of your network properties dialog
box make sure you turn off XPs Internet Connection
Firewall on both machines. You want a firewall running on
your connection to the Internet but not on your internal
network. Also make sure you shut off your other
firewalls. You can turn on firewalls and adjust them once
the network is running.
2. Make sure you create a user name and password on the
machine you want to access. Create an identical user name
and password on the other machine.
3. Share a folder or printer you want access to.
4. Logon using the user name and password you created in
step two.

There is a lot of good information in the XP help screens.

Greetings ChrisM,

The error message about Spooler Subsystem App when you
are running the Network Wizard, I have seen this a few
times and there is a workground. There is also a related
MS KB Article.

First, take a look at the following MS KB article before
following these instructions. Here's watcha do. Try
stopping the spooler service before setting up the home
network.

1. Open a command prompt window.

2. Stop the spooler service - type "net stop spooler"
(without quotes) and hit the ENTER key.

3. Then setup the network. After you finish then you can
restart the
service.

NOTE: You can restart the spooler service by typing "net
start spooler"
(without quotes) or rebooting the machine.

Here's the MS KB Article:

Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem and Needs
to Close" and
"Operation Could Not Be Completed" Error Messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=324757

While troubleshooting disable and uninstall all other
firewalls. When you click "View Workgroup Computers", and
the other computers don't show up, it could be many
reasons, but it also very well could be the other machine
is in another workgroup. You can still access other
machines reguardless wheather workgroup names are the
same because Windows supports multiple workgroups.
