Can't run programs or download files

In the process of Setting up my new DSL account something
happened to my registry (I think). I can no longer run
programs and cannot download files from the internet.
Even when I "Run As" administrator I cannot for example
start "Set Program Access and defaults". The programs I
can no longer run are too long to list. I tried re-
installing XP Pro. That did not seem to help. I tried
creating a new user as an Administrator. When trying to
logon as the new user the computer hangs before ever
coming up.

Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Rick,

It sounds like the symptom started recently. You should be able to restore
your system to the state it was in prior to changing the DSL settings using
Windows XP's System Restore. Choose a restore point from prior to the
settings changes.

Hi Rick,

On reading your post again, System Restore may not be an option (you
performed a reinstall). If that is indeed what you find, look at the KB
Articles on resetting security defaults.

Paul,

Thank you for the response. As an ex CE guy I know this
takes time. I tried the Security Reset - no difference. I
don't seem to have any Software restrictions configured -
so there was nothing obvious there to change. The other
interesting thing is that I can create new accounts but
when I try to login to them the computer just hangs. It
seems like it has to be something with group or account
permissions. I have never had to do the Run As before
and now the Box is checked
saying "Protect my Computer and data from unauthorized
program activity. I do have a workgroup setup with 2
computers here at home but I reset the Computer Name etc
so I could reset up the group.

If you have any more ideas I am willing to try them.

Thanks,

Rick
