Can't run Lavasoft's Adaware in XP Pro

Lavasoft's Adaware will not run in XP Pro. Also won't
uninstall. I always get the error message: "Ad-aware.exe
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience". This error message pops up
immediately -- don't even get to Adaware's splash screen.
Likewise I get this message when I I try to
uninstall: "UNWISE.EXE has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

Adaware does run when I boot to safe mode.

The error code info shows (besides Adaware) many modules
referring to files that seem to be related to a service
pack -- though I really don't have the expertise and
knowledge to decipher all that code in the error message
report.

Any idea? Posted to Lavasofts support forums, but no
luck yet. Is there a way to save a log of that error code
and post it here? Tried the 328310 update -- no luck.

Thanks

If you take a look at the Control Panel's Admin Tools you'll find the Event
Viewer.
Here you can look at the System and Application logs for any further details
on error messages.

Post again if you find more detailed info.

Martin.

(PS I've got the latest AdAware running and updated fine on XP Pro).

Thanks Martin,

Well, I've never had problems before with Adaware, but I
recently made a hardware upgrade and had to reinstall Xp
and all my applications, I don't know at which point
Adaware got fouled-up because I was trying get everything
installed at set up as quickly as possible.

There errors show up as events under applications as:
Description: Faulting application ad-aware.exe, version

When you re-installed XP did you re-install SP1 too?

You may also want to try running the System File Checker.
Open the Command Prompt and type

sfc /?

for usage and syntax.

I'd use

sfc /scannow

You'll need your Windows XP CD-ROM for SFC to run.
SFC may keep asking you to insert the XP CD-ROM even though you've already
done so - just keep pressing the Retry button and eventually it'll complete
it's scan.

Martin.

Thanks Martin,

I'll have to remember that tip -- might prove usfull.
However in this case it didn't fix my problem. But, I
did figure out what was wrong. I Used msconfig/startup --
selected Disable all, rebooted and Adaware ran fine.
Then selected applications one at a time until the
problem occurred again. The culprit was Autoext, the
auto connect feature of my wife's Delta VPN connector
software. She uses this to connect to the Delta Airlines
Extranet from this computer (Delta Airlines employee).
We had the same software installed in Win XP Pro on the
old hardware, so I didn't know why it should be a
problem now. So, I uninstalled the the DeltaNet VPN
Extranet software, reinstalled it, and both programs work
fine now. This Delta Extranet software is by Nortel, by
the way -- for what it's worth. The driver installed
gave me the "this driver is not digitally signed" error
message. But the main thing is, everything is working
fine now!

Thanks again.
