Can't Return from StandBy

All of a sudden my laptop started having problems with StandBy mode. It goes
into StandBy, but when I try to bring it back to life, it goes through the
process of activating (there is background disk activity), but the screen
remains blank. Eventually the disk activity stops and the PC is frozen. The
only thing I can do at this point is to reboot the PC--which defeats the
whole idea of going into StangBy mode in the first place.

StandBy used to work fine before. I'm not sure when this started acting up.
It could be after one of the many OS upgrades. I'm currently running Windows
XP Pro 2002 SP2 and as far as I know my updates are current.

The PC in question is a Gateway laptop, 450XL, 2.0 GHz Pentium IV Mobile,
with 1 Gig of RAM.

I've reinstalled both the video dispaly and the touchpad drivers, but that
didn't make any difference.

I hope there is a fix to this problem without having to reinstall Windows
from scratch. Please advise.

Gateway's solution is to uninstall SP2. I surely hope that there is a better
solution and that I don't have to get rid of SP2 just to get StandBy to work
properly.
