I need to reformat my hard drive and reload my XP pro OS and all my
software. I made a boot floppy and copied format program to it. And booted
to that floppy. I tried to run the format command and got the error it won't
run in DOS mode? Can someone tell be the steps I must take to reformat my
hard drive?

Thanks

Ok, if all you want to do is just reformat the hard drive. Go to the
hard drive manufactures website and download the installation utility,
they all have one. If I remember correctly, Western Digitals works on
just about any hard drive within last 5 or 6 years. These utilities will
format, and partition and allow you to reinstall Windows, Linux or what
have you. If you have access to Partition Magic you can do basically
anything you want to with that hard drive.

I take it that your not trying to reinstall from your XP Pro
installation disk, is that a correct assumption?

Hello Logan,
I have Partition Magic SE6 --- what is the procedure (steps) to enlarge my C: drive? Or how to merge an E: drive and put it in C:
dive to make it bigger? Yes, all my partitions are in one drive and will the process delete all files? TIA

I am trying to reinstall XP Pro, but a I want a "clean" install. The system
has over time ran slower and slower and has got unstable. I loaded Norton
Internet Security and now nothing works? I figure before I get Norton
involved, I'll clean up my system. I have an Hitachi/IBM #HTS726060M9AT00.
I've been on both Hitachi and IBM sites and can't find a installation
utility. But I will keep looking. But this utility will alow me to reformat
with the NTFS file system and I will then be able to reload XP pro?

Thanks for your help!

One quick question. What are you going to reinstall from i.e. a back up
image of the previous installation or are you going to install from the
from the original Windows XP Professional installation disk and then
install all you software separately. The reason that I'm asking is that
if you install from the XP disk; is that it will do all the twisting
and turning for you. It will ask you if you

1. Want to install a second XP installation on this hard drive. It will
say not recommended. Never do this option

2. Want to remove previous installation and continue.

3. I do not have the exact verbiage, but you will be asked if you want
to DELETE the partition (primary). Answer Yes. It will tell you what
the max. size of the new partition can be and allow you to adjust it if
you want. This is only important if you have MORE than one partition on
your PRIMARY hard drive i.e. C drive ( Buss 0 Partition 0) and it's
important because if you have more than one partition what you do to one
affects the others so you must be somewhat careful . If you only have
one partition allow it to be deleted and let windows run the show.
You will then be asked about creating a new partition and the size. Yes
to creating and the maximum size is the size of your hard drive. The
Installation will now delete the old partition create a new one, format
it. and set it active, and then install your Windows XP on a CLEAN Hard
Drive.

Why don't you email me directly? please and I'll answer it's not
difficult but takes some explanation

A boot diskette is a thing of the past, as all legitimate WinXP
installation CDs are already bootable.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

What if he only got a Reinstall Image, not a XP install CD?

Then he'll accomplish his goal that much quicker.
