Thanks Bert.
Your first topic requires me to have a command prompt. I don't know how to
do this, as I can't successfully launch Safe Mode with command prompt. I
read that I may be able to create a bootable floppy that provides the DOS
prompt, but has no other tools. Would I need to have created this disk from
my XP system before it crashed to still have that option available to me?
Your second suggestion cautions that MS recommends using an Automatic System
Recovery backup disk before attemptiing the procedure. I don't know that I
have an ASR disk. How and when would I have created that disk?
Also, this procedure assumes access to the system is not available except by
using Recovery Console. That rules this out, because I don't have access by
Recovery Console. When I try, I get the Stop Error .
Am I out of luck? I don't want to loose all my data. Would I be better off
buying a new hard drive, installing XP and making my bad system drive the
slave?
Sorry for all of the questions, but I feel helpless at this point.

Hi Jeff,
Try this first:
How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows
XP:

If the above didn't work try this.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting:

Please help.
My XP Pro crashed a week ago. Will not re-boot to last
good configuration. I can't boot from the CD. Can't
access Recovery Console.
What are my options at this point? Thanks in advance.
