As of a week ago I can not receive my email in windows. My ISP is O2. I get
an error message and a pop up asking for my usernamen and password when I
enter them it does not solve the problem but pops up again. I have checked
all the information on the account. What I cant understand is that it has
always worked perfectly until now.

Test your password by logging in to webmail.
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Account: 'Cottage Mail', Server: 'mail.o2.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Thanks for your reply. Above is the error message I receive. I have tested
password in webmail as recommended and that is ok. I will go through the
rest of your suggestions and let you know how I get on.

Check that all your account settings are as per the following o2 page, they
describe Outlook Express, Windows Mail uses exactly the same settings.

As Gary already suggested, the account may have been corrupted by 3rd party
interference, AV etc?
You can remove the account, restart WM, and rebuild the account from
scratch.
