I have a number of programs loaded onmy computer and when I go to start /
programs, the programs are listed in three columns. However, the third column
(on the far right) is off the screen and cannot be read.

How can I move the third column over so I can read this part of the program
list?

Rearranging the Start Menu
Right click Start button
Select Explore and/or Explore All Users.
Then open the Programs folder.
Create new subfolders then rearrange shortcuts.
OR
You can also configure your programs list to scroll which results in one large
column.
Right-click the Start button
Go to Properties
Click the Customize button.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll through the list until you see the item "Scroll Programs".
Check that and hit OK.

I like you idea of rearranging the start menu and I took you advice and
right click start then Explore. However, when Explore opens I only see about
20 files and folders. My start list consists of about 70 files and folders.

What am I doing wrong and how do I get ALL these files and folders to show
in Explore so I can create new folders and rearrange?

Thanks

The Start Menu displayed from the Start | Programs is from two folders...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Start Menu

Or

%allusersprofile%\Start Menu
and
%homepath%\Start Menu
-----

With the Classic Start Menu, both of these need to be UNChecked.
XP Start Menu doesn't have Use Personalized Menus option.

XP Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button | Advanced tab |
Scroll down to and UNCheck:
Scroll Programs * |
OK | Apply | OK

Classic Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Scroll down to and UNCheck both of these:
Scroll Programs * |
Use Personalized Menus **
OK | Apply | OK

[*Specifies whether to display the items on the Programs menu as one long
scrolling menu or as horizontal pages. Depending on your screen resolution,
if you have more than 29 or 38 programs installed, and you select to have
one long scrolling menu, you can access the programs you don’t see
by clicking the arrow at each end of the list of programs.]

[**Specifies whether to turn on Personalized Menus.
Personalized Menus keeps the Programs menu clean by hiding items you haven't
used recently, while still keeping other programs easily accessible. You
can gain access to hidden programs by clicking the down arrow at the bottom
of the Programs menu.]

I see that the other answers aren't working out for you, for whatever
reason. You might like to try my work-around. First.....I suggest you
Right click on the Start Button, & choose Properties > tick Small Icons.

As for adding folders: Right click on the Desktop & choose New Folder
(rename it whatever you want or wait til you have it placed & Rename
it). Right Click on your new folder & drag it to Start>Programs, drop
it wherever you want it in the 1st column..........& choose Move Here
(be sure NOT to select Copy, as that will only give you a shortcut to
the desktop folder).
