Hi,

I've been trying to fix a friends computer, a Dell Dimension 4400, and have
run into some trouble.

It wouldn't connect to the internet, so I ran Norton and it wound msblaster.
I removed it. Then it wouldn't boot properly. I took out the hard drive, to
back up the data onto my computer. I can read most of the drive, but I
cannot read the documents folder for the login protected user. It says
access denied make sure folder is not in use. Now this drive is connected to
my comp as a slave.

Can anyone help me save my friends data?

Hi,

You need to take ownership of them. Right-click the folder, select
properties. Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control
of the folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP
Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and
logon as administrator. More details here:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]

An additional note for WinXP Pro users: This procedure will not help you
recover data if the files are encrypted. All you will be able to do is
delete them. To recover encrypted files you will need the original
encryption certificate or a Recovery Agent from the installation under which
they were encrypted. Without one of these, the files are not recoverable.

I want to clarify my problem. I'm trying to get data off a friends drive so
I can store it while I reinstall XP on their machine. I've put their drive
in my computer as a slave. I only have one account on my XP Home Edition, so
I believe I'm running as the administrator. When I right-click on a folder,
I do not see any securities tab to click to take ownership of the folder?
Does this make it any clearer? Can I get the Administrator documents from
another hard drive onto mine? I know the password for their administrator
account, but their machine will not boot!
Should I still have to go into SAFE MODE to get administrator rights?

Help? Again?

Hi,

From XP Home, the only way is Safe mode. Hit F8 at boot to get the menu.

Thanks Rick,

I've gone into SAFE MODE and found out how to take ownership. Backup now
complete.

Wish me luck on the new install.
