Windows XP - Version 5.1 (Build xpsp_2600_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2)

Problem: During boot, folder deleted by scandisk as "Completely Unreadable".

Need to re-create folder with same name to re-install program since several computers are linked to this folder through network.

Folder is not visible in Windows Explorer.

View options set to view all files including system files.

Attempts to re-create folder receive message "Cannot Rename Folder: A file with the name you specified already exists: Specify a different
file name".

All profiles show same error message.

Tested disk with several disk tools including manufacturers diagnosis software. Disk not damaged.

How can I fix this?

Thanks,

Calvin

Probably a dumb question, but have you tried rebooting the computer? IF
you're sure it really doesn't already exist, then the os is having a problem
"forgetting" it.

Good question but Yes, the computer has been rebooted several times and as you say, the system seems to have a problem "forgetting".

Run CMD and type this:

RMDIR /?

After studying your options, try removing the missing directory, files
and subfolders. If successful, you should be able to recreate the folder.

Thanks Joe but I've tried that. I've even tried using the repair console after booting with the CD. In "DOS" mode, it says that the
directory doesn't exist. There MUST be a Windows related command that hides folders even from "DOS". I know there are programs that hide
files and folders from the system so there has to be some way this is accomplished by Windows.

BTW, the file system is NTFS.

Thanks for your reply,

John

The DOS command ATTRIB could help.. Type this:

ATTRIB -H C:\[folder path and name]

Maybe you can see the folder then, but I doubt it.. Also run Scandisk
again and see if it will repair it or free it up.

Do a search for the folder name. Scandisk may have added an extension
to the folder name.

Maybe there are special programs that will repair the hd without a reformat.
