I am unable to prevent Outlook 2000 automatically starting up in Windows XP
Pro.
It is not among the startup files shown by msconfig. I have searched the
registry and cannot find what is doing it. The only clue I have is that if I
change the email program in Internet Options to Outlook Express, then that
starts up instead. The machine is clean of viruses, pests etc and there is no
downside other than the annoyance factor.

I have found the answer by upgrading the BIOS in my Sony VAIO VGN-A15GP.
From the Sony web site:

"BIOS Upgrade Program R0080F1

This BIOS firmware will resolve the following symptoms:
1. Once Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is installed, Microsoft Outlook or
Outlook Express will start automatically when Windows starts up.
2. Problems with CAD softwares.
3. Various games may cause the system to stop responding.
4. The system stops responding when the memory usage performance of the
system cache has been changed."
