Can't play DVDs

I'm running XP. When I try to play a DVD in Windows Media it locks up. I hear the DVD spinning and see the titles on the screen but it won't play. When I play a DVD in WinDVD i get a message"JPG: Can't open Splash.jpg" Then it plays theDVD but its very choppy, video and and sound. Help......Please.....
