Right click the .AVI file and select "Open With"
Here select Windows Media Player and tick the mark next

Hi,
my laptop has just developed a problem with avi files -
it won't play them. It keeps giving me the message :
The specified file is invalid or the MCI device failed to open the video.

All other file types play - mpeg, mp3 etc - but not .AVI
I've just had a problem with malware/spyware and may
have deleted something I shouldn't have - I'm not
sure.

Hi JR - I tried that and it keeps giving me the message :

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

I've tried it with every avi file on my machine. My webcam can record videos - but again it won't play them back................

Thanks
Andrew

I am having the same problem but with asf and wmv files.
the same spyware/.malware issues as well. HELP!!!

try doing an xp repair, if not maybe a new installation may be easiest.

Hi,
I tried doing system restore - but every single date I try from the options it gives me says it was unable to permorm it and no changes have been made. All this after waiting 10 minutes for it to go through it's stuff. Any ideas why it won't do it ?
Then I tried doing a sytem recovery from the cd - it did the system recovery to what it claims is "the factory condidtion - without affecting any stored data" - and that's made no difference at all.....................
where do I go from here ?

Cheers

Apart from sending it to a sytems specialist to track down what you have
removed either by accident or via the malware, it may be best to back up all
your info and do a fresh install of Windows.
