I hope my response to someone else experiencing the same phenomenon a couple
of days ago is helpful:

There are two likely scenarios: one is that the movie file you've downloaded
from "sources unknown" is a bogus movie file and it has no video component.
This happens a lot on the filesharing networks with new releases and is the
main reason we need sites with verified-genuine file info such as
http://www.fasttrackmovies.com

The second possibility is that you don't have the video codec installed
which this movie file requires. Download GSpot from
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and stick it in a folder somewhere- you
don't need to "install" it. Open your avi file with it, and it will tell
you which video codec is required to play the movie and whether or not you
have it installed already. If you don't, just do a Google search for the
codec.

Ian.
