mike

i'm a newbie w/o networking experience.
added an xp pro box to my home network. other boxes on the home network
(192.168.2.XXX) cannot ping the new xp box. the new xp box can ping all the
other boxes on the home network. also the new xp box can get to the
internet. i don't have the ms firewall enabled on the new xp box. the new xp
box was preloaded with os, but i don't believe there is any firewall
software installed. norton system works is installed on the new xp box. any
help would be appreciated.
thanks,
mike

Have u chked that u are in the same work group... the
easiest way is to use xp pros network wizard and create a
network disk and use it on the other machines........

finally figured it out. my employer has us put CISCO VPN on our home
machines. even though i wasn't connected to the company network via vpn at
the time i was having problems, the CISCO vpn has a service that was
running. i stopped the service, switched it to manual from auto startup and
everything was fine. now i'll just start the service manually when i need to
connect to the company network.

thanks for the help and suggestions.

Mike

Mike,

Just keep in mind that the Cisco client with it's stateful firewall was put
there on purpose. So if you disable it and run around in "hot" sites without
a firewall installed you might catch a virus in your system and the next
time fire up the VPN to your employer's network you might slip in that virus
there too ... and I think your boss might not appreciate that.

Just my 2c...
