Can't ping myself!

I'm stumped. Just got a new laptop and want to collect files off my desktop
before turning it over to the family. Desktop can ping laptop, laptop can
ping desktop, laptop can ping itself, desktop cannot ping itself. All
pinging done by addresses shown by ipconfig. I must not be a total idiot
because in all of three minutes I connected to my desktop at work and
harvesting info off of it! If I run the network diagnostics included in the
MS Help and Support Center, it tries to test a NIC that is no longer
installed as well as two instances of the NIC that is installed. I don't get
it. Any help/insight would be GREATLY appreciated!

Dean,

What's the actual problem? Inability to ping is a symptom, which we can deal
with, but it might be useful to know why you decided to ping yourself. Without
knowing any details, I'd suspect an LSP / Winsock problem, so start there.
There are 6 tests / changes to make; try each one until you fix the problem.
