Well I guess I will join the many who are having trouble networking and
asking for help. I have 3 computers they have been networked for more than
two years and worked just fine. Recently I noticed that the 2 desktops with
XP Home could not see the Laptop with XP Pro, I could work around the
problem because the Laptop could see the desktops and I could transfer files
that way. I use the laptop on the road and need to move files around when
home. I had some time off for the Holidays and decided to fix this problem.
The first thing I noticed is I can't ping the laptop from either of the
desktops? I am assuming this condition happened after installing XP SP2. I
have tried every suggestion I have seen on the post site no help. Net View
reports "Network Path Not Found" IP Config all seems normal and the same on
all machines except for IP address. I have turned off all firewalls and
antivirus software no help.

anybody got any ideas?

Software firewalls other then the Windows firewall need to be
uninstalled to be truly disabled. And the firewall ZoneAlarm makes it
so you have to rebuild the TCP/IP stack after removing it because it
leaves its settings in the registry on uninstall.

Removing Zone Alarm did not help still no ping, I can't understand why I
can't ping when the laptop can communicate with the other two computers? The
laptop can ping itself. and also I noticed that sometimes the
network/places/entire network will show all computers and like today the
laptop only shows itself and one desktop shows the workgroup but if I click
on it says not available, the third desktop shows all three???

I just looked at entire network again on the computer that said NOT
AVAILABLE and now 10 min. later all three computers are there??? What
gives????

Carl,

With computers appearing and disappearing in Network Neighborhood, a browser
conflict sounds likely.

Also, check for overlooked firewalls. Make sure that ZA is the only firewall
component affecting you.

Take a look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Did you not read the part where I said that ZoneAlarm doesn't remove any
of its screwed up settings. A good software firewall will do this
ZoneAlarm breaks it & leaves it broken
